The M135i; rated as the best in class for years on end, receiving a 4.5 out of 5 stars by Dan Prosser in Evo magazine at the time of launch and still seen today as a performance car bargain, these cars have been highly regarded from the outset. From the first push of the start button, it is evident that these cars were designed to be driven, a raspy straight six bark emitted on cold start, which quietens right down to a buttery smooth and almost inaudible burble when cruising around town, revs smoothly taken care of by the frankly sublime ZF 8 speed automatic gearbox. Flick the car into sports mode and manual and it comes alive. The exhaust note is to die for, creamy smooth and purposeful, a masterpiece for a standard family hatchback! The car’s handling will not disappoint either, on its brand new PS4 tyres, the ride is as compliant as any luxury barge thanks to its light weight, but don’t let that fool you. Grip levels on the front axle on initial turn in make you wonder why this isn’t a fully-fledged M car, razor sharp adjustments that are pinpoint accurate with a quick rack for collecting slides. The brakes are also immense, so much power that you’re never likely to need more!

 

It really is the full package. Quiet and refined for the family and daily duties, but with tonnes of power and incredible handling and feedback levels for a modern car for Sunday drives and I’m sure it would handle track days with aplomb.
